In the U.S., Black Americans are killed by police at a much higher rate than other racial and ethnic groups,

From 2013 to 2022, 98% of police killings did not result in officers facing charges. Even with public attention, few officers face criminal charges, contributing to steady rates of violence.

Vice President Harris and Demorats push for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to become law.

-Grant power to the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division to issue subpoenas to police departments

-Establish a federal registry of police misconduct complaints and disciplinary actions

-Enhance accountability for police officers who commit misconduct

The executive order championed by Democrats includes

-permitted federal police to use force only as a tool of last resort.

-curtailed when federal police could enter a home without knocking and announcing themselves and when they could use chokeholds.

-mandated body cameras.

-limited the transfer and sale of federal military equipment to state and local law enforcement.

-required the Department of Justice to launch a national misconduct database for federal police

Hours into his return to the Oval Office in 2024, President Trump revokes the executive order that aimed to “advance effective, accountable policing and criminal justice practices to enhance public trust and public safety.”
